Uncover the lives of two American heroes: William Dallas and Emma Coger. Dallas, Quincy’s first black policeman, was a member of the 55th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. Tragically killed in the line of duty, his legacy was memorialized in Woodland Cemetery decades later. Coger taught in Quincy’s all-black school, Lincoln School, and was a pioneer in the early civil rights movement. Her case informed many other prominent civil rights cases, including Brown vs. Board of Education.
Speakers: Dr. Justin P. Coffey is Aaron Pembleton Chair in History at Quincy University. He is the author of Spiro T. Agnew and the Rise of the Republican Right. | Macey Ferguson-Smith is a licensed social worker with Quincy Medical Group.
