From the Author:

"I began recounting these reminiscences of Alishar in very late December 1998. It was a joy to relive our magical months [in 1930, 1932 and 1962], reaching and then being a part of this ancient Anatolian village. Accompanying my husband, whose scholarly pursuit and assignment brought about his return after many years, I happily did the 'housework' (such as it was), and became acquainted with our neighbors. During the long, inspiring days, I painted the villagers and their environs. With reproductions of my watercolors, ink sketches, John's evocative photographs, his notes from the 1930's, and my finished text, I put together my book and was to send it to a publisher for consideration. However, the very day before this was to be attended to, I surprisingly came upon material regarding Alishar I had written in 1963 upon our return. Obviously it cried out to be included in my story….With the national upsurge of interest in the Muslim world during this worrisome period, I am trusting that my sincere and true picture of the villagers will affirm their admirable, peace-loving character, and their fortitude…."
