Bringing The Classroom To History

Teaching history creates lasting connections that help students understand not just our community's past, but their own place in it. At HSQAC, we offer immersive educational experiences that bring textbooks to life — either through easy-to-use classroom resources or guided tours of historical buildings and exhibits.

Our educational programs align with state learning standards while offering students the chance to walk in the footsteps of pioneers, abolitionists, and civic leaders. Each tour or in-classroom resource is led by experienced interpreters who make learning interesting through highly-researched storytelling.

Visiting Our Sites

We know how challenging it can be to plan field trips that are both educational and engaging. That's why we offer two carefully designed tour experiences that take the guesswork out of planning. Each program combines hands-on learning with fascinating local history, creating memorable experiences that complement classroom curriculum. Our standard tours have been refined through years of feedback from Adams County teachers to deliver maximum educational value while being easy to schedule and manage.

Customizable Group Experiences

Beyond our standard programs, HSQAC works with teachers to create specialized tours that complement specific curriculum needs for grades 6-12. Whether you're studying the Civil War, architectural history, or local government, we can tailor an experience that brings your classroom topics to life. This includes adapting some of our most popular programs, like the Woodland Cemetery Tours, for students.

These unique tours are available as time, personnel, and funding allow.

Civil War Video Series

Our new educational series highlights the lives of Quincy citizens who served in the Civil War and are buried in Woodland Cemetery. This unique series includes:

  • Illinois in the Civil War 1861 - 1865
  • Architects of Change (Coming Spring 2025)
  • Medical Stalwarts (Coming Spring 2025)

Each 30-40 minute segment comes with comprehensive teaching materials, including:

  • Detailed lesson guides
  • Historical maps
  • Period photographs
  • Discussion questions

This project was developed through the efforts of HSQAC, Tri-States Civil War Round Table, the Bicentennial Commission, and the Quincy Public Schools. It is available to all Adams County public and parochial schools.

Research & Primary Materials

Teachers and students can access our extensive collection of primary source materials online. Our thousands of assets include:

  • Historical photographs
  • Original documents
  • Period newspapers
